Anyway, see you all soon.

Hong Kong

14th September

sunny 32 °C

Hi,

So its our last day in Hong kong before we catch our flight at 11pm. Had a trip out yesterday to the south side of hong kong island, had a bit of time on the beach, i went swimming in the sea and got covered in orange stuff?!?! haha. Watched the light show in the harbour at night, all these buildings flashing in different colours to music....WOW!!!!

Off to the science museum for a bit today just to finish off our day.....and for sarah to learn about science!!!! hehe. Going to get the bus to the airport at about 7pm so that we can get good aisle seats on the flight...fingers crossed. We've been taking aspirin so nobody worry.

HK - Lantau Island

12 September

sunny 32 °C

Hello All!

Had a rather good day today taking a trip to one of the islands surrounding Hong Kong. Set off on the underground to Lantau Island, where we then caught a bus for the 'ride' of our lives, the round was very bendy and steep over the mountains!! Arrived (in one piece!) at the biggest outdoor bronze buddha in the world (not a claim that will have many rivals i guess!!! haha). Had a look around and then a vegetarian lunch in the nearby monastry. After this we set off on another bus to the beach - had a bit of a paddle and took some more photos. We then got the bus back to another port and took a ferry to the main HK isalnd.

Just had a sandwich for tea (as there arent alot of restaurants round here).

Not sure what we're doing tomorrow, its been scorching again today.

Guiln - Guangzhou (Overnight Train)

9th September

sunny 38 °C

Hello,

Firstly: Happy Birthday Nat!

We've just got off the minibus from Yangshuo and are sat in the youth hostel in guilin - being cheeky and using their facilities until our train departs at 8pm to Guangzhou (last stop before Hong Kong).
Theres been a change to the itinary - when we get to guangzhou - we're going to get straight on the express train to HK rather than stay a night. we'vre book ed hotel in HK for the 10th (not the Miramar as there was no availability) we're staying in the Prudential Hotel which is just up the rd from the Miramar.

So, we bought some more bits and bobs and a huge bag to carry them all in. we also got Si a new ruck sack for his PHD... seen as the other one is broken and there was the incident in the back pocket with tip-ex (about 3 months ago and its still not cleaned up). You'll be pleased to know this one is lime green! dispite all my colour and style advice he couldnt be pursuaded otherwise : )

So we're off to a supermarket round the corner to stock up on train snacks (the train is 16 hrs so we get in at 12.00 tmz).

Simon doesnt have anything to contribute as he's dying to get on this PC to mess around with his MP3 thingi (men!).

Love Sarah and Si x

ps. Remind us to tell you afunny incident about me climbing through a hotel window.

pps. Whats happening at the Airport - we thought lori might not be there whioch would mean we could all get in 1 car, but i assume if ur in oxford for a bit then she will be. We dont care as long as you co-ordinate it between yourselves. thanks!

Yangshuo

8th September

sunny 38 °C

Afternoon,

Just sat in a bar having a beer (actually i'm on the ginger ale!) and waiting for our food to come.

Today's been loads of fun, had a trip out to the moon water caves (those paying attention will realise its near moon hill, yesterday's destination!!). We had a 3km pot holing type trek through the caves which ended in a underground mud bath. Sarah managed to keep her hair and face nearly spotless, but we both had lots of fun! Some of the gaps were very small for me to sqeeze through!! haha. And it was a good job we were wearing hard hats! Don't worry we have photo's! :-)

Just spent the evening buing table cloths etc for people!! We're getting a minibus back to guilin tomorrow so we can get the night train to Guangzhou-we're in soft sleeper!!!!!!! :-)

Our foods here now so i'm off to eat!

Yangshuo

7th September

sunny 35 °C

Hi

Well this hopefully won't be a long email because:

a) Sarah's stayed in the room because she's a bit tired,
and
b) The keys on the keyboard in the internet room have been completely rubbed off so this is taking me ages!!

Well we got up quite early today mainly because we left the air con on all night and this kept us awake- it sounded like a jet taking off right above my head. This won't be happening tonight, we'll just boil.
Went for a nice fried egg breakfast (all this chinese food is ok for a while!) and then decided to hire bikes for the day. Only 80p for a whole day, 'wow' i thought.....then they dragged the bikes out.....'owch!' i thought. They were pretty new mountain bikes with suspension but thats about as good as they got. They looked like they'd been dropped off a cliff and then put back together. You were lucky if your gears worked!!! Our bums were very painful when we got back! :-)

So we set off through the chinese country side and ended up at a place called 'moon hill'. It was kinda of...well....a big hill to be honest!! So we climbed 1250 steps to reach the top- hard work believe me! Views were excellent so we took some good photo's.

We then tried to cycle back but got lost twice in the countryside and eventually ended up having to take a bamboo boat back down river to a place we passed previously, because the sun was so hot!! It was an excellent ride down the 'rapids' (note, i use that term extremely loosly!! haha) and very relaxing. We then cycled on back home and had a nice shower to cool down.

Turns out that sarah got slightly sunburnt on her shoulders, and also found another 3 bites to add to her collection!! (don't laugh people!) I must just stink something rotten- is there something you all haven't been telling me for the past 22 years?!?! haha. :-) So at the moment the mosquito bite count is about 11 to 0 in sarah's favour!!

Anyway, we've been having lots of fun and will probably go out to some water caves tomorrow. hope you're all well. We'll try and get whatever presents people want (think we're going to have to buy ANOTHER bag- this'll cost us a fortune in polythene in hong kong!! haha)

See you all soon.

Love Si and Sarah (i can put my name first for once!!)
